Have anyone ever did the experiment in science class that had to grow the lima bean plant? They gave you dirt, a plastic cup and a seed. You had to take it home, care for it and bring it back in 2 or 3 weeks for the final grade. I know when I first planted the seed, I was excited! (Don’t ask me why, but I was!) I put the dirt in the cup, put the seed in, watered it a little and put it in my window. In two days I was excited to see some physical results, surely. Nope. Just dirt. The next day, just dirt. Mama told me again it was ok to water it some more, the soil was looking dry. So I did just that. After a week after bringing it home, still dirt in the cup. And I got discouraged. Surely I was doing something wrong! Things like this always happened to me. I either missed a step or something! But I continued. Watered it when the soil got dry again.
I can remember the excitement I had when I first saw a green bud of life in that soil! IT’S WORKING! Yes! Then day by day, the stem got longer, and longer. The buds on the stem then soon sprouted a leaf! When we had to bring it back to school, everyone’s looked the same. (Well mostly, some clearly didn’t take care of their lima bean, and all you saw was dirt in their cups.) But for the ones who nourished their seed, the product of it was there.
Well, you guessed it! The seeds we plant in our lives, spiritually, are just like that! What we pray for, what we do for others (and even the bad seeds we plant) takes time to manifest in the physical world! The reason why it seems like it takes more time that we anticipate it taking is because:
- God does things in HIS time, not our timetable
- To develop our patience
- To firmly root itself before manifestation, to be unshakable and unmoveable
For example, let’s think of it as, when we pray for ourselves! (I mean, we all do that right?) OK, so you praying to yourself, “Lord, I want to be like you! Show me your ways God. Help me to stay humble and help be do your will Lord!” I will let you know an inside scoop.. whatever you ask of God, He wants it purely developed in you so it will last. You want to stay humble, better believe God will put you in some ‘humbling’ situations where you can practice it. That’s Him “watering” your seed you plant. God will bring some people in your life to speak life into that seed. Yes, that Him, again, watering the seed you plant. That “rain” that you may think is pouring in your life, oh better believe that is His “watering” the seed. When you feel like giving up, and your soil becomes a little dry, God sends people to come and water and bring light to you. As you go, and don’t give up, what you don’t see is the root attaching getting deeper and stronger, and before long you will notice the fruits of the seed!
As we read in Isaiah 30:23 NIV “He will also send you rain for the seed you sow in the ground, and the food that comes from the land will be rich and plentiful. In that day your cattle will graze in broad meadows.”
I took this verse as, “God will send the rain to water your seed, however it may come. Let it. Whatever you sow, as God waters, the reaping will be plentiful! And not for you, but everything that is attached to you, will reap the benefits of what you have sown.” So back to the example, if you are praying and asking him for gentleness, humbleness and peace in your life, as God waters it, your reaping for you will be great peace and joy, for you and for others!
How amazing that God multiplies what you ask for! Yes, he is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above what we ask, but how gracious is He! When we think about the reward, our dedication to Him by what He has allowed in our life should be unwavering! But it will take some watering. It will take some days where it feels like He isn’t doing anything. It will take some days where it feels like your prayers aren’t working! It will take those days, but believe God is always working! Believe God will do just what He said, and what you asked for, exceedingly and abundantly.
Just a little bit of joy on today!
